What do you need for healthy growth? Actually, only fertile soil, sun and water. There is enough sun in southern Senegal, but not always enough water for the early phase of a new plantation. That is why we drill a borehole, the water will be pumped up by using a solar driven device. And by the fact that we irrigate, organic material quickly decays into humus and improves the soil, which in turn allows water to penetrate and be held better.
Our first borehole was drilled by hand by a local crew over a two-week period. This is physically hard work in the tropical heat, many thanks to all people involved! Again, another important step taken.
